1899-1984 Michaux is a poet of unique style, one that is particularly difficult to pinpoint. He most closely resembles the surrealists, but cannot even accurately be grouped with them. Frederic Sepher pointed out that much of his poetry reads like short stories, although most of it does rhyme.

Henri Michaux was born in 1899 in Namur, Belgium, and spent his childhood in Brussels. He is best known for his poetry, painting, drawing and travel writing. His contacts with members of the Parisian circle of artists including Giorgio de Chirico, Paul Klee, Max Ernst and Salvador Dalí and his experiments with hallucinatory drugs, as did his travels in Asia and South America provided.

Biography Travels In 1930 and 1931, Michaux visited Japan, China and India. The result of this trip was the book A Barbarian in Asia. [5] [6] [7] Asian culture became one of his biggest influences. The philosophy of Buddhism and calligraphy later became principal subjects of many of his poems and inspired many of his drawings.

In 1939, he published Peintures, which included poems and his own abstract drawings. During the Second World War, he stayed in the south of France and met André Gide. In 1941, André Gide's "Découvrons Henri Michaux" drew the attention of the general public to him and his work. This notoriety bothered him tremendously.
